ALL DOWN TO DOHA: 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE ON A KNIFE EDGE

Via: LGCT

After what’s already been a rollercoaster season of high octane showjumping set against glittering backdrops around the globe, the 2016 Champion of Champions title will be decided at the grand finale in Doha, Qatar, this coming November. The fight for the prestigious title will play out under the stunning AL SHAQAB equestrian centre in the heart of Qatar, and history will be made with either Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE) or Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) taking home the stunning LGCT trophy.

Following a dramatic weekend in Vienna, the points standings remain as they are with Rolf just five points ahead of his rival Edwina on a cumulative tally of 272 overall. Rolf has been in this position before, twice finishing on exactly the same number of points as the eventual winner, however losing it on the number of Grand Prix wins. This year however, Rolf has two Grand Prix golds to his name, in Paris and Valkenswaard, and currently sits in pole position to take the 2016 title. Rolf will be bringing his mighty stallion Casall ASK, and with the formidable partnership looking stronger than ever, the pair will be giving it their all to earn the honour of having their names added to the prestigious list engraved on the trophy.

However, Edwina could make history by becoming the first rider ever to win the Champion of Champions title three times, having won the trophy twice before. The top Australian rider will have the choice of two of her top horses, Olympic contender Lintea Tequila, with whom she won the LGCT Miami Beach with earlier this year, or Caretina de Joter, another of her top mares.

Either way, it’s set to be an unmissable weekend of sport, with the Grand Prix the final act in what has already been a captivating and enthralling season. With the title on a knife edge, and two worthy Champions chomping at the bit to take top honours, it’ll soon be time for the final hand to be played. While the result will be anyone’s guess, one thing is for sure; you won’t want to miss this.
