UNDER THE LIGHTS IN ABU DHABI: THE LONGINES LEAGUE OF NATIONS™ IS BACK
The sun has dipped below the horizon, the floodlights flicker on, and the first rails glint under a warm Abu Dhabi night. Horses prick their ears, teams gather on the in-gate, and the season’s first big statement is about to be made.
This is how the Longines League of Nations™ 2026 is to begin – on a Friday evening in Abu Dhabi, with the world’s best Jumping teams stepping straight into the spotlight.
For the third year running, the UAE capital hosts the opening leg of the FEI’s flagship team series, but this season brings a fresh stage. The action moves to the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club (ADEC), a venue with deep roots in the sport and a renewed energy after extensive redevelopment.
Founded in 1976, ADEC blends tradition with modern top-sport credentials. It now boasts a new FEI-accredited hybrid arena, permanent stabling, expansive warm-up areas and the kind of infrastructure required to host CSI4*-W and CSI5* competition – including the prestigious UAE President’s Cup.
For fans, it means something just as important: closeness. Great sightlines, an open layout and a setting that lets spectators feel part of the sport rather than distant observers.
“We’re excited to welcome everyone to a venue that combines history with world-class facilities,” said Mohammed Al Nakhi of the UAE Jumping Committee. “It’s designed for the athletes and horses, but also for the fans who come to experience Jumping up close.”
Friday night energy
One of the standout changes for 2026 is the decision to stage the Longines League of Nations™ team competition on Friday evening. The timing brings cooler temperatures, a sharper atmosphere and a sense of occasion that suits elite team sport.
“It creates a different energy,” Al Nakhi explained. “Friday night Jumping under lights allows more people to attend after the working week and really enjoy the experience.”
For casual fans, it is the perfect entry point – national colours, clear storylines, pressure moments and a crowd that knows something special is unfolding.
A stage for big moments
Abu Dhabi already knows how to deliver when it counts. The opening leg of the 2025 season produced one of the competition’s most memorable results, with Ireland securing a famous win and the UAE team finishing second against a stacked international field.
“Seeing the UAE team finish second was a proud moment,” Al Nakhi said. “It showed how far the sport has come locally and created an atmosphere no one inside the venue will forget.”
That blend of elite international sport and home-grown ambition continues to shape the event’s identity.
Launching the Longines League of Nations™ season brings unique pressure. Broadcast infrastructure, course design, veterinary oversight, footing management and international logistics all have to align from day one.
Behind the scenes, the organising team draws on decades of experience and constant benchmarking with leading venues worldwide. Horse welfare sits at the heart of every decision – from climate-appropriate schedules and cooling areas to continuous veterinary monitoring and carefully prepared footing.
Support for riders and grooms is equally central, with on-site accommodation, rest areas and efficient logistics helping the competition run smoothly from first inspection to final jump-off.
An invitation to new fans
Sustainability also plays a growing role at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club. Water-management systems, waste-reduction initiatives and the reuse of footing materials are already in place, alongside energy-efficiency upgrades and responsible sourcing across food and beverage operations.
These efforts align with wider UAE sustainability goals while supporting top-level sport and welfare standards.
As the Longines League of Nations™ returns to Abu Dhabi in 2026, spectators can expect expanded entertainment, more cafés and retail outlets, and easy access in the heart of the city.
“We’re grateful to the fans who continue to support Jumping here,” said Al Nakhi. “We warmly encourage new fans to come and experience the sport in person.” For those watching from further afield, global streaming coverage ensures no moment is missed.
Hosting the world’s best teams has a lasting impact beyond the arena. For Emirati riders, it provides inspiration, exposure and a clear view of what the top of the sport demands.
“Competing alongside the world’s best is invaluable,” Al Nakhi concluded. “It strengthens our pathways, supports the development of young horses and riders, and helps build a sustainable future for Jumping in the UAE.”
When the first team canters into the ring on that Friday night, the message will be clear: the Longines League of Nations™ season has begun – and Abu Dhabi is ready to set the tone.
